December Quickies

(I don't know what I did to publish this on 6 November, but it surely wasn't supposed to be there!  I'm sorry this is a repeat for some of you.)

Conventional Medicine

Do You Really Need a Tetanus Booster?

Results of a study published in 2016 on the persistence of vaccine-induced antibody responses to tetanus and diphtheria in 546 adults showed that the 10-year adult booster vaccination schedule should be re-examined.  And while we shouldn’t blindly adopt the practices of other countries, it is noteworthy that the UK doesn’t administer the any adult booster vaccinations after the initial 5-dose immunization series.  Most European countries recommend much longer intervals between vaccines.[1]

Mathematical models suggest that 95% of adults fully vaccinated in childhood against both diphtheria and tetanus remain protected against these two diseases for over 30 years.  Moreover, the protection against tetanus for over 95% of the population lasts more than 64 years. [2]  Basically, if you’re reading this, you probably don’t need tetanus or diphtheria boosters for the rest of your life.

Food

Enjoy Yeast Breads: Both Plain and Fancy is a publication from the Box Elder County, Utah, Cooperative Extension Office.  This 37-page booklet provides detailed information on the bread-making process, starting with ingredients and measuring correctly, kneading, testing to be sure the dough is ready, the best pans to use, and so much more.

This guide is written to residents of Utah, most of whom live at high altitude.  Specifically, it seems aimed at novice bread-bakers.  So many people in our society were not taught how to make bread from scratch.  Bread making is an important skill to have.  However, the principles of bread-making apply to all, regardless of elevation. The plethora of good advice, if followed, will have you cranking out amazing bread in no time.
