Preparedness Uses for Diatomaceous Earth

In an effort to keep things simple, some people go overboard and try to simplify too much.  For example, there is no one perfect antibiotic to stockpile.  There is no one OTC pain reliever that will service in all situations.  Likewise with other natural treatments.  It might make good press or get you a lot of hits on your article, but there really aren't 40+ good uses for diatomaceous earth.  It hasn't been scientifically proven to prevent Alzheimer's or osteoporosis or reduce cholesterol or any of numerous other diseases.  However, what diatomaceous earth does do, it does well. And for these purposes, you may wish to have some on hand.

First off, diatomaceous earth (DE) kills all kinds of insects and worms.  Food grade DE can be sprinkled in your storage buckets of grains and beans to kill any bugs in there.  It is recommended to use one cup of DE per five-gallon bucket.  When the food is prepared, the DE will be in the food, but there is no taste to it and no adverse effects at all.

However, one of DE's most important uses, especially from a preparedness standpoint, is its efficacy in eliminating parasites, especially worms.  DE will completely eliminate roundworms, heartworms, tapeworms, pinworms, hookworms, and whipworms in animals and people.  DE may be sprinkled on food or mixed into a glass of water or juice or any other beverage.  One dose should do the job, but it's best to take a few doses of DE for a couple of days just to be sure.

Under 25 lbs                1/2 teaspoon
25-50 lbs                      1 teaspoon
50-100 lbs                    1 tablespoon
over 100 lbs                 2 tablespoons

Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled over anthills to kill ants and on bedding to eliminate bedbugs.  It can also be sprinkled on pets to control fleas.  There's no concern about toxicity, and DE never goes bad.
