It occurred to me today that everything would also include the plastic bottles that hold laundry detergent and laundry pre-treatment solutions. All the bottle parts and likely all the chemicals that go into those bottles originate in China. And if even one little item or ingredient is missing, well, it may not be replaced soon.
And so I realized that it’s time to get those laundry pre-treatment options written down. Recipes for laundry detergent have been posted previously. Keep in mind that none of these will smell as nicely as the commercial products. There will be no fresh scent, spring breeze, or anything else coming out of these DIY options. However, a few drops of essential oil may be added to the pre-treatment options, if desired.
There are several different pre-treatment options, depending on what exactly you have available.
Laundry Pre-treatment #1
- Equal amounts of Wisk, white vinegar, ammonia, and water
Combine everything in a spray bottle and shake well. Treat spots before starting washer.

- 1 quart water
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 2 quarts water
- ½ cup ammonia
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 2 tablespoons Dawn Dish detergent
- 2 parts hydrogen peroxide
- 1 part soap
- 1 gallon hot water
- 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
- ¼ cup liquid bleach
Combine everything in a 5-gallon bucket, sink, or washer. Add clothes. Soak for 20 minutes then launder as usual.

I've been deeling with shortages for 3 years now. At work spare parts and repair materials that used to be stock are now weeks or in some cases 20 months delivery. The value of 'critical spares' we keep in storage has nearly tripled.
ReplyDeleteOn the personal side its less extreme but our preferred brand of dish soap has been missing from shelves for months in all the nearby stores.
The oldest manages a department in a grocery stores. She asked the regional manager why the shortages and was told the higher ups had ordered that the city stores not be shorted so the people in them wouldnt notice the shortages.

It might be for the best to make sure the cities don't get shorted. That way the rural areas see the holes sooner and better and perhaps wake up and understand the need for "critical spares" of everything and are able to purchase what is needed online or in the cities before they can't be obtained at all.
DeleteI am still amazed that essential repair parts are so hard to get. I can hardly wait for the enemy to start taking out our transformers and we have no back up. I hope everyone is prepared for a winter without electricity. And I really hope we all have another year to prepare for it, but I doubt it.
