Garlic, Allium sativum, is one of a few antibacterial herbs that is eliminated from the body through the lungs, which makes it particularly effective for treating respiratory infections.[1] Hundreds of studies over the years indicate that fresh garlic preparations are more efficacious than powder.[2] [3] As is the case with many herbs and drugs, combinations in formulas are frequently more effective than the use of single herbs, and garlic in particular has been found to be extremely effective when paired with honey.[4]
However, garlic’s medicinal uses go far beyond antibacterial and respiratory infections. In fact, regular consumption of garlic has been shown to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels in diabetics, and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. In addition, it also reduces the risk for several kinds of cancer. These reasons alone warrant planting a lot of it in the garden and using it every day in a variety of ways.
HARVEST
Bulbs are harvested in the late summer, after the top has died back. Let the bulbs air dry for a few days outside in the shade, and then store them in a cool, dry place inside.

Raw garlic cloves, eaten with meals. Minimum effective dose is considered to be 1 garlic clove per day. Maximum effective dose is 6 cloves per day.
Tincture, fresh bulb, 1:2. Dosage is 15-40 drops.[23]

Children’s Ear Oil
5 cloves garlic
4 ounces olive oil
20 drops eucalyptus oil
Place finely chopped garlic in a small ramekin and cover with olive oil. (If you have a really small crockpot with a warm setting, this is ideal.) Cook or bake over very low heat overnight. Crush the garlic cloves and strain well. Add the eucalyptus oil to the strained garlic oil and stir well to combine. Store in a dark glass bottle. To use, warm both the infused oil and an eyedropper. Suction up the ear oil and then place 2 drops in each ear every 30 minutes or as needed for 2-7 days.[60]
Caution. Higher doses may interact with warfarin.[61] Larger doses of the juice may cause vomiting.[62]
