We’re
smack dab in the middle of fall now, which means it’s apple season. My grocery store had a great sale on Envy and
Sweetango apples. I wanted a box of
each. Unfortunately, as so often occurs
now that we have supply chain issues, the advertised apples did not come in on
the truck by the time I was shopping that day.
The produce manager told me they’d be in that evening.
As my
husband had an appointment in town the next day, he offered to pick them
up. But due to further supply chain
issues, only the Envy apples were available by the box. Sweetango apples were, however, available by
the pound, so Aaron brought home half a dozen in addition to the half dozen I
bought the previous day.
The
Envy apples were crispy and flavorful.
The Sweetango most decidedly were not, and I was really glad we hadn’t
purchased an entire box. But we still
needed to eat what we had. I didn’t want
to can them or make applesauce. I just
didn’t think they would taste that good.
I
got to wondering how they would do in a smoothie, so I turned to Food.com for
some recipes.
This
first one was really simple and quite tasty.
Apple Brown Betty Smoothie
1 cup plain yogurt
1 apple, cored
and cut into wedges
1 banana
equivalent
1 tablespoon
brown sugar
¼ teaspoon
cinnamon
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
Apple Blueberry Smoothie
1 cup plain yogurt
1 apple, cored
and cut into wedges
½ cup milk
½ cup
blueberries
2 tablespoons
sugar
½ teaspoon
vanilla extract
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
Apple Strawberry Smoothie
1 cup plain
yogurt
1 apple, cored
and cut into wedges
1 cup strawberries
½ cup milk
1 tablespoon
sugar
½ teaspoon
vanilla extract
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
Apple Cherry Smoothie
1 cup plain
yogurt
1 apple, cored
and cut into wedges
1 cup pitted
cherries
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon
vanilla extract
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
Apple Blackberry Smoothie
1 cup plain
yogurt
1 apple, cored
and cut into wedges
¾ cup
blackberries
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons
sugar
½ teaspoon
vanilla extract
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
For the rest of
the year when fresh apples aren’t available or are too expensive, try this:
Apple Pie Smoothie
1 cup
applesauce
½ cup plain yogurt
½ cup apple
juice
1 banana
equivalent
1 tablespoon
brown sugar
½ teaspoon
cinnamon
¼ teaspoon
allspice
¼ teaspoon
nutmeg
4-6 ice cubes
Combine
everything in a blender and whirl until smooth and creamy.
